National Chairman of Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC), Prince Vincent Okumagba, has heaved a euphoric sigh of relief as the status of Godswill Akpabio International Stadium (The Nest of Champions) was restored as home for the Super Eagles qualifying matches.
According to him, “The news was well received by members as we agreed on the reasons put forward by the NFF, the technical crew and the players.” He posited that the unanimous nature of the decision was overwhelming and total, which signified the focus and resolve to squarely face the task ahead against the Cameroonians in the August 2018 Russia World Cup qualifying game.
He described the false information of change of venue as another calculated attempt to undermine the concerted efforts and focus of the NFF and the coaches to pick tickets for the two impending major football championships in 2018 and 2019 respectively.
He commended Amaju Pinnick and his men for quickly disowning that wicked rumour of those who are bent on working against the NFF.
“It has saved the country many unforeseen and unpleasant circumstances. The zeal displayed by all the parties further showed patriotism and how serious the entire key players to our collective resolve to pick the sole group ticket for next year’s World Cup finals in Russia have reverberated.
“To put it mildly, it has given the whole set up great impetus and sense of responsibility,” Okumagba observed.
He added that this is a rare occasion where an issue was promptly resolved without first opening it to public debate which would have as usual wanted much time before it could be settled.
The NFSC boss called on Nigerians to adopt this oneness of purpose as a way of life and road map to resolving any kind of issue without much hassle. He insisted that the quick resolution remains a stitch in time. He pointed out that it would give everyone space to plan well and redouble strategies well ahead the anticipated epic encounter.
“I must commend the Amaju Pinnick led NFF, its executive committee members; Gernot Rohr’s technical crew and the entire Super Eagles players for their foresight to nip the ugly trend on the bud,” he remarked.
It would be recalled that this was confirmed by the General Secretary of the federation, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi. “We have not changed venue of Super Eagles matches from Uyo to any other venue. I read the reports, but I can tell you that the NFF did not take such a decision. For now, Uyo remains home for the Eagles,” Sanusi stated.
“If we decide to change venue for Eagles home games, it will be communicated to the media, CAF and FIFA. For all I know, we have not changed venue. Uyo has been good to us and we cannot because we lost to South Africa run away from there.”
He also assured that Nigeria will bounce back from the defeat to South Africa and qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
