Rivers United defeated KCCA of Uganda 2-1 at home Tuesday, but coach Stanley Eguma said the Port Harcourt club ought to have won by a bigger margin so as to improve their chances of going beyond a tight CAF Confederation Cup Group A.
The result has shot Rivers United to second place in the standings with six points from four games before Club Africain of Tunisia host FUS Rabat of Morocco in the other game of the group same day.
Rivers United could further enhance their chances of reaching the knockout rounds of the competition when they host Club Africain on July 2.
“We won but I expected more goals because for us to qualify from this group we have to score goals,” Eguma said at the post-match press conference in Port Harcourt.
“We were hungry for goals and we started well but we were a bit careless in front of goal especially in the first half.
“We planned to finish this game in the first half.
“We should have ended the first half with at least four goals or more but all the same we won, which was the most important thing.”
Eguma said his team remain confident of a place in the knockout stage of the tournament.
“It’s a tight group, we are new on the continent, but we remain optimistic we can qualify from this group, we will improve on our performance especially away from home,” he said.
