Former Nigeria World Cup star Victor Ikpeba has assured the Super Eagles will bounce back from a shock home defeat to South Africa to be stronger for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon.
The Eagles were stunned 2-0 by South Africa at the weekend in an AFCON 2019 qualifier, but Ikpeba said he expects them to pick themselves up and be ready to battle African champions Cameroon on the road to Russia 2018.
“I believe we will be stronger for the matches against Cameroon,” the NFF technical committee member told SCORENigeria
“We will still need Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and some of the more established players going forward.
“Mikel’s personality drives the team, for one.”
Ikpeba, who celebrated his 44th birthday today, also told SCORENigeria the young players who featured against South Africa should be encouraged.
“They are good players and they only need to be encouraged, maybe some of them are not ready yet,” said the former African Footballer of the Year.
“They did very well in the first half and had they scored then, it would have eased the pressure on them.”
Ikpeba was also confident Nigeria will qualify for Cameroon 2019.
“The Eagles will still qualify for the AFCON,” he declared.
“The loss on Saturday is not the end of the world, we only need to be a little more patient.
“Who says we cannot beat Bafana Bafana in South Africa?”
