Former national Decathlon champion Brown Ebewele is back on the board of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) following Monday’s election by technical officials of the federation to choose a representative into the board.
Ebewele, fondly called Jujuman by Nigerian athletics followers, polled a total of 31 votes, 12 more than his nearest challenger, reigning Nigerian record holder in the 400m hurdles, Henry Amike.
The loss by Amike effectively ended his AFN presidential ambition.
The Edo state-born Ebewele was the technical committee head in his first stint in the AFN and looks set to return to that position 19 years after under Tony Urhobo who was president between 1997 and 1998.
Ebewele’s election, celebrated by local athletics watchers, has increased the number of people who have either been voted or nominated into the in-coming board of the AFN to five.
Former national triple jumper queen and record holder, Rosa Collins, who is one of the favourites for the AFN presidency, leads the cast of new members coming into the AFN. Others are Mrs Maria Worphil, a former Secretary General of the federation who is coming in courtesy her membership of the IAAF women’s committee; Professor Ojemeh who won through the National Association of Physical and Health Education and a representative of the Nigeria Police Force who will represent the Armed Forces in the board.
