Former AS Monaco star Victor Ikpeba has saluted the team’s conquest of French Ligue 1, but at the same time he warned they will have to be clever on the transfer market if they are to sustain the momentum to compete with the top guns of Europe.
Monaco won the Ligue 1 crown Wednesday night when they beat Saint Etienne 2-0 to record an unassailable 92 points with a game to go till the end of the season.
It was their first championship in 17 years.
They also won the championship 20 years ago with Ikpeba, Sonny Anderson, Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet and Emmanuel Petit at the peak of their powers.
“Monaco have done brilliantly well especially if you remember they had to play in the French second-tier league and faced a financial crisis not too long ago,” Ikpeba told SCORENigeria
“But they put their faith in youngsters and a handful of experienced players and it has now paid rich dividends.
“It is a big achievement, something to be very proud of after beating a dominant PSG with all the money they have.
“It has been a record-breaking season during which they score more than 100 goals and did well to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they accounted for the likes of Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.”
However, Ikpeba, who has earned the nickname ‘Prince of Monaco’ because of what he achieved at the team from the Principality, warned that how they wheel and deal on the transfer market will go a long way to determine if they can still stand toe-to-toe with Europe’s super clubs.
“Football is big business these days more than in our own days and I know a few of these players who made them champions may leave, but even the big clubs sell players. That’s the reality of football,” he further told SCORENigeria
“The Russian owners will now hope to make some money.
“But they should sell cleverly and at the same time buy wisely.”
