Rangers retain Enugu State Federation Cup

By Daily Sports on May 8, 2017

Rangers FC of Enugu on Sunday beat Coal City Youths 1-0 to retain Enugu State Federation Cup.

Kelvin Itoya scored Rangers’ lone goal in the 20th minute from a defensive error.

Coal City Youths came back more determined in the second half but wasted several scoring chances in front Rangers goal post.

Rangers’ Interim Coach, Chukwuma Agbo, praised the resilience of Coal City’s players and described the game as a test match for their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match against Gombe United.

“It is good that we retained the Enugu State Federation Cup we won last year because the trophy is always a motivator to players to keep doing well,’’ he said.

He also hailed his players and expressed the hope that they would replicate their commitment in the NPFL in the second stanza.

His Coal City Youths counterpart, Godwin Onumonu, hailed his players saying that poor finishing in front of the goal robbed them the trophy.

“You can see that we gave Rangers a run for our money but we needed maturity to outwit them but it was not found during the match.

“I wish Federation Cup is a two legged match so that we will have another opportunity but so be it,’’ Onumonu said.

He said that his team would have battled Rangers to a standstill if not for the defensive errors that gave them the only goal of the match. (NAN)
