The National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF) has commended the leadership of the League Management Company for its decision to intervene in the crisis rocking Sunshine FC.
This follows the protest march by Sunshine Stars FC players and officials and other affiliate teams of the Ondo State Football Agency for non-payment of their salaries for several months
The Players Union, according to a statement issued on Friday in Lagos, signed by its General Secretary, Comrade Austin Popo, disclosed that information available to it suggest that the LMC has agreed to pay the affected players and coaches of Sunshine Stars FC some part of the salaries as palliative measure to enable them go back to their training and prepare for their next league game.
“The union equally welcome and support the decision of the LMC requesting the club to open up its books for investigation in accordance with the relevant provisions of the LMC framework following the admission by the former Governor of the state that he has been releasing the monies for the payment of players and officials salaries and other expenses to the club.
“As we have stated earlier, it is important that players and officials of clubs must take up the responsibility of protecting their welfare and career by giving out the right information on their welfare status to the relevant football regulatory and organising bodies, including the union to avoid the ugly incidence of the Sunshine crises capable of affecting the growth and development of the game if not properly managed.”
In a related development NANPF has congratulated His Excellency, Rotimi Akeredolu, a patron of the Players Union, who has been sworn in as the Executive Governor of Ondo State. “We rejoice with you and the good people of Ondo State. May your leadership move the state forward and deliver the dividends of democracy to the people,” NANPF said.
