Former member of the immediate past Delta State Sports Commission, Hon. Ejiro Etoroma, has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Super Eagles and their handlers led by Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr to urgently buckle up in their preparations for the World Cup Qualifying double header against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon before it will be too late.
He said the call has become necessary because the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon of today are a different team from the Lions before the 31st edition of the Africa Cup of Nations held in Gabon where the central African country braved all odds to emerge champions. He explained that the Lions were not considered as favourites before the commencement of the continental Premier Football fiesta.
Etoroma said the earlier the country started preparing for the World Cup Qualifying double header against Cameroon, the better as it afford them the opportunity to plough all the loopholes discovered in Eagles earlier games in the qualifiers particularly as it affects the defence line.
The Engineer turned sports administrator stated this in an exclusive interview with Daily Sports during the week.
“Well, I would like to start by saying first and foremost that football is not mathematics,” Etoroma declared.
“With what transpired during the recently-concluded Africa Cup of Nations that held in Gabon, where the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon emerged champions of Africa against all odds, there is a new confidence in the team and we have to watch it.
“Of course nobody gave them any chance of winning the continental premier football fiesta before the commencement of the championship.
“So, the Super Eagles should realise that the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon of today are not the same with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon of pre-tournament era.
“With their emergence as the kings of African Football, the Indomitable Lions are now fired up. The Lions’ victory in Gabon has shored up their confidence and as a result, it will be foolhardy to think that the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon of the pre-tournament era are the same. Despite the fact that we are leaders in our group in the World Cup Qualifiers, it doesn’t mean that we should go to bed. And the fact that they emerged champions of Africa at the recently concluded 31st edition of the Africa Cup of Nations doesn’t mean that they are going to defeat us when we meet in the World Cup Qualifying double header in August.
“I would want to advice the Eagles and their handlers to urgently buckle up by way of commencing preparations for the double header that comes up in August. There is need for us to start preparing for the games on time particularly as it affects our defence line. Whatever loopholes that have been discovered during our previous two games should be ploughed if we must stand a chance of making something out of the two matches that await us against Cameroon,” Etoroma advised.
