Former executive committee member of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Prince Isidore Oduah, has declared that the best thing that has happened to Women Basketball in the country is the involvement of Zenith Bank Nigeria Plc in the sponsorship of that category of the game. He made the statement in Lagos during an exclusive interview with Daily Sports, stressing that the swift entry by Zenith Bank to take up the sponsorship of Women Basketball has instantly brought sanity, life and vigour back to the game.
He said: “That decisive step by Zenith Bank to rescue Women Basketball came at the right time it is the major reason why we are witnessing tremendous improvement in the game at that category bringing out the competitive nature among the players in one hand and the teams on the other. Fact is that more Women players are increasingly getting interested and involved in the sport.
“The truth must be told and commendation given to whom it is due, Zenith Bank has done excellently well in that begging area of our Basketball in the country. There has been non-stop action as the women knew their pockets would bulge at the end. The zeal has been upbeat. It remains another steady bold step forward that Zenith Bank has taken and its determination and raw strength glaring in the sand of time in Nigerian sports.”
The former Vice Chairman of Anambra State Football Association posited further that Zenith Bank’s genuine entry into the sponsorship of Women Basketball came with bravery, commitment and zeal signifying that near moribund sports could be brought back to life and it goes ahead to win laurels for the country.
“I have at different fora expressed my deep delight at this Zenith Bank example. The Women Basketball has drastically improved. I have watched some matches in Women Basketball severally in different seasons since the bank took over the sponsorship and can safely say without any prejudice that there have been marked improvement season after season.
“The sponsors have done well by ensuring that the sponsorship packages are promptly given to the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), hence the full concentration by teams, their technical crew and above all the incidence of poor officiating has drastically reduced. Fans have also come out to identify with their teams and their idol players too, which can safely be described as Zenith Bank magic,” he remarked.
Oduah, who was also served as former director of finance on the board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, urged the bank not to rest on its oars as its effort has set the tone for taking numerous girls off the streets.
