West Ham finally agree to sell Payet to Marseille for £25m

By Daily Sports on January 30, 2017

Payet has travelled to France for a medical to complete the transfer to the Ligue 1 club, from whom he moved to the Premier League just 18 months ago.

The fee for the player has been confirmed as £25m and the acceptance of the deal brings to an end a long-running and occasionally controversial transfer saga.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic first confirmed details of Payet's refusal to play for the club at a press conference on January 12 and the news was received with anger by the team's supporters.

There have been lengthy negotiations over the fee for the France international, for whom West Ham paid Marseille £10.7m in June 2015.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic previously insisted the club won't be forced into selling Dimitri Payet for less than he's worth.

On January 24, Marseille had a £22.5m bid for Payet turned down but have secured his service by offering just £2.5m more than that figure.

Throughout the negotiations Payet made it clear he wanted to return to Marseille for family reasons and trained with the Hammers' U23 squad.

He scored 15 goals in 60 appearances for West Ham and was rewarded with a new five-and-a-half year deal last February.

Payet signalled his exit from English football by posting on Twitter a photograph of a small jet, as he made his journey to France.

He captioned it: "On rentre a la maison", which translates as "We're going home".
