The National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF) has advised players who have served out their contract with their clubs but are having challenges in securing their clearance for registration with new clubs to write officially to the League Management Company (LMC) or the Nigerian National League (NNL) requesting for a copy of their contract and subsequently approach their new clubs with the contract paper without waiting for any form of clearance from the former club.
NANPF General Secretary, Comrade Austin Popo in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the resolution was the outcome of his discussion with the Chief Operating Officer of the League Management Company, Mallam Salihu Abubakar “on the vexed issue of compelling players who have served out their contract by some clubs to exchange monies owed them for their Clearance Certificates. They should also take note that this development does not affect monies owed them by their clubs.”
He advised that “while they move on they can apply to the relevant football authorities with the necessary documents showing clubs indebtedness to them and this hopefully will be sorted out.
Finally it is also important to note that this development only applies to players who have served out their contracts. In other words players must as a matter of necessity be aware of the duration of the contract they signed.”
Meanwhile, the NANPF wants football governing bodies in the country like the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), LMC and the NNL to investigate the forceful demand by some Football Clubs from players who have served out their contract but still have outstanding monies in form of salaries and match bonuses to collect from their clubs to exchange these debts for issuance of Clearance Certificate to further their careers.
“It is important to state here categorically that a professional player who has served out his contract with his club has the right to move to another club of his choice without any form of inhibitions by his former club in line with the relevant provisions of FIFA rules and regulations governing the administrative procedure of the status and transfer of professional footballers as well as that of the relevant provisions of the LMC framework,” Popo said.
He emphasised that the abuse of the rights of the players calls for concern of all football and regulatory bodies due to its negative impact on the quality of football in the country. He also expressed concern that clubs administrators usually put players under pressure through delay of the release of their clearance certificate.
