Anichebe linked with Eagles’ return

By daily sports on December 6, 2016

Nigeria wants to hand Victor Anichebe an international recall for the first time in more than five years, according to reports.

A call-up could be bad news for Sunderland, potentially taking the influential striker away from their January 14 Premier League game at home to Stoke City.

Anichebe won the last of his 10 full international caps in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in Madagascar in September 2011, but Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, is reportedly interested in reintegrating the forward.

With Nigeria not involved in next year’s African Cup of Nations, it seems likely the Black Cats will try to persuade the 28-year-old not to take part if selected for friendlies against Ivory Coast and Senegal.

Rohr is keen to involve more European-based players and is said to have drawn up a list of targets, most of whom initially declared allegiance to the countries they live in.

The games will be played in the second week of January.

They will help the Ivory Coast and Senegal in their preparations for the African Cup of Nations, while Rohr sees it as an opportunity to prepare for their World Cup qualifier double-header with Cameroon, who he believes play a similar style.

Liverpool’s Jordan Ibe, Germany Under-20 captain Kelvin Akpoguma, Chuba Akpom, Moses Odubayo, Karim Onisowo, Ola Aina and Dominic Solanke are others thought to be in Rohr’s sights. (NAN)
