The National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF) has intensified its efforts at ensuring that clubs that are indebted to players and coaches are made to pay up their debts. This follows the recent recovery of funds by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the clubs under the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) as Broadcast Rights from Total Promotions.
A statement issued on Monday by NANPF General Secretary, Comrade Austin Popo, said clubs no longer have valid reason to owe players and coaches. He said that based on the advice of the leadership of the Nigeria Professional Football League Clubs Owners Association, whom the Players Union had earlier contacted, “the Union has communicated to all the concerned clubs on the need, and for the sake of justice and fair play to ensue payment of their debts to the affected players and coaches from their share of the money as contained in the Nigeria Football Federation Players Status and Arbitration Committee decisions as well as others authenticated by details of the contract of the players and coaches.”
The Union said that since the excuse of the clubs in the past was lack of funds, “now that they will be getting their shares from the Broadcast Rights monies recovered by the EFCC which is generated from the collective image rights of the players and coaches, we strongly advise that part of the recovered money, if not all, should be used to settle the debts owed the players and coaches; and avoid the temptation of diverting such to individual pockets.”
“We like to commend the effort made thus far by the leadership of the NPFL clubs owners association in ensuring that the players and coaches issues are properly looked into and want the clubs to do same. However, the players Union has equally drawn the attention of the EFCC and the Trade Union Congress to the ongoing development,” the statement concluded.
