Nigeria failed to impress in Limbe on Wednesday as the defending champions and favourites to lift the African Women Cup of Nations were held to a 1-1 draw by Ghana.
Elizabeth Addo’s 44th minute leveled the scores for Yussif Basigi’s women after they had gone down in the 22 minutes thanks to Asisat Oshoala’s strike.
Having won their opening fixtures, both sides came into the clash knowing a win would all but assure them of a place in the quarter-final.
But what followed was a disjointed affair devoid of any real pattern, although the Super Falcons created the clearer goalscoring opportunities.
Ghana goalkeeper Ama Asantewaa put in an excellent display and made a superb save in each half, scooping Oshoala’s header away following a pinpoint cross in the second period before keeping out Ngozi Okobi’s shot five yards out with just three minutes remaining.
After a turgid first half, the game burst into life after the break but it ended in a no winner, no vanquished state – though Nigeria were denied a penalty in the dying minutes after Asisat Oshoala was upended in the Black Queens’ penalty area.
Francesca Ordgea even spurned a late chance to win it, wasting a golden opportunity to claim the landmark outright when she fired wide from close range after she was set up by Faith Ikidi.
Nigeria face Kenya in their last game on Saturday at the Stade Municipal de Limbe, while Ghana try Mali for size at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, Yaoundé.
