Rooney hits out at 'disgraceful' media after England controversy

Wayne Rooney has described his treatment by the media as "disgraceful" after he was photographed drunk while on international duty with England.

Pictures of the Manchester United captain circulated over the weekend, with reports subsequently claiming that he would be stripped of the Three Lions' captaincy as a result of his actions.

Rooney, however, has come out fighting, and insists that he is not yet ready to accept that his career, at both club and international level, is over.

"It feels as if the media are trying to write my obituary and I won't let that happen," he told reporters after Manchester United's draw with Arsenal.

"What's been going on is disgraceful. I'm proud to play for my country and I'm proud of my achievements. I've not finished yet.

"I think what's been going on is disgraceful. It shows a lack of respect and I think enough is enough.

"That's all I want to say."

Rooney has struggled for form throughout the 2016-17 season, and has failed to score for United in the Premier League since the opening day of the campaign.

Question marks have also been raised over his continued inclusion for the Three Lions, after his fluctuating form at club level, and he dropped out of Gareth Southgate's squad prior to the 2-2 draw with Spain due to injury. (goal.com)
