Brazil, Argentina fined over fan behaviour in World Cup qualifiers

FIFA has fined football associations including both Argentina and Brazil over fan behaviour at World Cup qualifiers.

In a statement, world football’s governing body said the punishments had been handed out for “discriminatory and unsporting conduct by fans,” with offences including anti-gay chants.

The statement said that proceedings had been opened following match reports from officials “and, in some instances, additional evidence generated by the anti-discrimination monitoring system.”

The associations disciplined included Albania, Kosovo, Croatia, Estonia, Ukraine, Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Iran, the statement said.

Albania and Croatia were fined just over £40,000 each with £25,000 punishments following for Kosovo, Brazil, Paraguay, Estonia, Ukraine, Chile and Argentina.

FIFA said Iran’s federation had been fined for “several religious manifestations during a match” in contravention of its rules.

The statement said: “The disciplinary committee took the decisions after analysing all of the specific circumstances of each case, in particular the match officials’ reports, the position adopted by the association (if applicable) as well as the anti-discrimination match observer’s report and the relevant evidence available.” (NAN)
