Nigeria Professional Footballers mourn NPFL star killed by soldiers

The National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF) has expressed shock over the death of Izu Joseph who died last Sunday in Bayelsa State. The young Nigeria Professional footballer with Shooting Stars of Ibadan was shot when he was caught up in a shooting by some men of the Nigerian Army in an undisclosed spot in Bayelsa.

A statement issued on Monday in Lagos by NANPF General Secretary, Comrade Austin Popo, described Joseph as a young player with a promising future sporting career, whose death “has cut short his dreams and caused us great sorrow.”

Popo said: “The news of Joseph’s death shocked the Nigerian football family, of which we are a part. The association recalled that the young defender just completed the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL 2015/2016 season which ended on Sunday 2nd October 2016 with, Shooting Stars of Ibadan

“From the National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers’, with the same pain that all football players have felt, we send our condolences to his club, family and the entire Nigerian football enthusiast in such a sad and unfair situation. May his gently soul rest in perfect peace.”
