Daily Sports apologises to Chioma Ajunwa-Opara, says she never blasted Sports Minister Solomon Dalung

The Management of Daily Sports on Monday tendered an unreserved apology to Olympics heroine Chioma Ajunwa-Opara, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), over a story the paper published on Sunday in which she was quoted as having carpeted the Sports and Youth Development Minister, Hon. Solomon Dalung, for allegedly saying that preparations do not matter during competitions but that what matters is the commitment of both athletes and coaches.

In a message which he personally sent to Ajunwa-Opara, the first ever Nigerian Olympic gold medallist, Daily Sports Publisher Isaac Umunna expressed regret for the distress which the story might have caused the athletics legend.

Umunna said the apology became necessary because investigation by the Management of Daily Sports had showed that she (Chioma Ajunwa-Opara) never granted the writer of the story any interview.

“I am distressed to learn that the story we published quoting you as blasting the Hon. Minister for Sports is false. It is unprofessional for our Reporter to quote you when you never spoke with him. Please accept the apologies of Daily Sports Management. Meanwhile, the story has been pulled down,” Umunna said.

He assured Chioma Ajunwa-Opara that Daily Sports holds her in high esteem and appealed to her not to allow the unfortunate incident to affect the cordial relationship existing between her and the paper.
