England World Cup 2022 win target scrapped by FA

By Daily Sports on September 7, 2016

England's target of winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been scrapped by the Football Association's new chairman Greg Clarke.

The goal was set by previous chairman Greg Dyke when he took over in 2013.

"I'm not going to put pressure on and say we are going to win this tournament or that tournament," said Clarke, who came into the role in August.

Clarke also described a clock at St George's Park with a countdown to the 2022 final as "daft".

England were knocked out of this summer's European Championship at the last-16 stage by minnows Iceland.

Roy Hodgson resigned as manager immediately after the shock defeat in July and has been replaced by Sam Allardyce, who oversaw a 1-0 win in the opening World Cup 2018 qualifier in Slovakia on Sunday.

Captain Wayne Rooney said last week that he intends to retire from internationals after the 2018 World Cup in Russia - but Clarke has not ruled out the Manchester United player continuing beyond then.

"I note that (Argentina captain Lionel) Messi retired and then decided to come back again," he said.

"If Wayne has a good World Cup and thinks to himself 'I fancy a bit more of that' and Sam wants to pick him, why wouldn't he (continue playing)?''
