Ogundinran claims 100m crown at Commonwealth Games trials

By Daily Sports Nigeria on June 23, 2026

US-based Blessing Ogundinran has claimed the women’s 100 metres title at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games National Trials in Lagos, clocking 11.12 seconds in the final to emerge as Nigeria’s new national champion in the event, The PUNCH reports.

Ogundinran edged teenage sensation Miracle Ezechukwu, who pushed her all the way with a new personal best of 11.15 seconds to finish second, while Olajide Olayinka placed third in 11.28 seconds.

Speaking after the race, Ogundinran revealed that composure was the key to her victory after an arduous journey to Lagos.

“When I was at the start block, I was thinking of what my coach told me — that I should just execute my race and not panic, and that was what I did. It was a tough time getting here after travelling for almost four days due to what happened in the US but I am grateful to God that I am going back with the title,” she said.

In another highlight of the day, Olympian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed the men’s shot put title for a record fifth time, launching 21.46 metres to further cement his dominance of the event since he began competing for Nigeria.

Oyesade Oyetayo also won the hammer throw with a mark of 65.07 metres.

The men’s 100 metres final is scheduled for Wednesday, with Favour Ashe, Chidera Ezeakor, Fakorede Adekalu, Tejiri Godwin and Enoch Adegoke among those through to the semifinals after winning their respective heats on Monday.

In the 400 metres semifinals, several leading athletes booked their places in the final scheduled for the last day of the three-day event. Patience Okon-George, IyanuOluwa Aderemi — who clocked a new personal best of 51.86 seconds — Taiwo Kudoro, Faith Ezechukwu, Jecinter Lawrence and Becky Ebiyadi all advanced in the women’s event, while Emmanuel Ojeli, Sikiru Adeyemi, Victor Sampson, Samson Nathaniel, Victory Achakpoekri and Tyler Johnson progressed in the men’s event.

The final day of competition will feature the 200 metres and 400 metres finals for both men and women, alongside the 100 metres hurdles and 110 metres hurdles.
