African Games 400m champion, Chidi Okezie, has set a new personal best of 32.05s in the men’s 300m at the Simbine Classic in Pretoria, South Africa, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
He recorded the sixth-fastest time across both finals in the event, which was won by Zambia’s Olympic bronze medallist, Muzala Samukonga, in 31.38s.
Okezie’s performance moved him to second on Nigeria’s all-time list in the event, just behind Innocent Egbunike’s record of 31.97s.
Before the Simbine Classic, he competed in the 200m at the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya, where he placed seventh in 20.74s. He had also finished third in the 200m at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix.
The Simbine Classic is a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver event.
The 32-year-old has been enjoying a busy season, competing in back-to-back races across Africa ahead of joining Nigeria’s contingent in Botswana for the 2026 World Relays.
At the 2024 World Relays in the Bahamas, Okezie played a key role in helping Nigeria secure qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
After winning his first African Games gold medal in Ghana in March 2024, he also contributed significantly to Nigeria’s men’s 4x400m and mixed 4x400m relay teams qualifying for the Olympics, delivering strong back-to-back performances at the World Relays.
