Musa dents Rivers title hopes as Rangers go top

By Daily Sports Nigeria on April 20, 2026

Enugu Rangers International have moved to the summit of the Nigeria Premier Football League after a dramatic weekend in the title race, with Kano Pillars’ late victory over Rivers United proving decisive, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Rivers United’s push for the title suffered a major setback in Kano, where they were beaten 2-1 by Kano Pillars in stoppage time.

Abdullahi Musa had given the hosts the lead in the 81st minute, before Handsome Surveyor levelled for the visitors in the 89th minute.

Just when Finidi George’s side thought they had salvaged a point, former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa struck deep into stoppage time to seal victory for the Pyramid City side.

The result opened the door for Rangers, who capitalised on Rivers United’s slip by edging Enyimba 2-1 in Enugu to move to the top of the table with 59 points, just one ahead of Rivers United.

After a goalless first half at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, former Rangers player Wonah Williams put Enyimba ahead, but the Flying Antelopes responded swiftly. Goals from defenders Chidozie Iwundu and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi within 10 minutes turned the game around and secured a crucial victory in the title race.

Elsewhere, Shooting Stars Sports Club boosted their continental ambitions with a 2-1 comeback win over El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri. John Zakka had given the hosts the lead midway through the first half, but substitute Qamar Adegoke scored twice in the second half to secure all three points for the Oluyole Warriors.

At other centres, Remo Stars and Nasarawa United recorded emphatic 3-0 wins over Niger Tornadoes and Warri Wolves respectively. Victor Chimezie, Ngei Oluka-Efor and Habibu Alakija scored for Nasarawa United, while Victor Mbaoma, Adedayo Olamilekan and Samuel Anakwe were on target for the defending champions in Ikenne.

Plateau United and Kun Khalifat shared the points in a 1-1 draw in Jos. Mmesoma Nnorom gave the visitors the lead before Alao Danbani equalised for the hosts in the first half.

Kwara United, meanwhile, consolidated their position with a 2-1 win over Barau FC. Toheeb Gidado and Saheed Olaniyi scored for United, while Joseph Atule netted a consolation for the visitors.

With FA Cup finals scheduled for next weekend, NPFL Match Day 36 fixtures will now take place on May 2–3.
