Rivers United FC coach Finidi George is delighted to see the club improve their finishing in the Nigeria Premier Football League after scoring three goals in two consecutive matches, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The NPFL table-toppers beat Bendel Insurance FC 3–1 on Sunday to maintain their lead in the Nigerian topflight, a few days after defeating El-Kanemi Warriors FC 3–0.
The 3–0 victory over El-Kanemi was the first time Rivers United scored three or more goals in an NPFL match since a 3–1 home win over Heartland FC in September 2024, during a matchday two fixture of the 2024/25 season.
Since then, they had not scored more than two goals in a league game until the back-to-back wins against El-Kanemi and Insurance, much to the delight of their coach.
“I think the players also believed that they could score. For us as coaches, we have not changed our method. We still do all our scoring drills, and it hadn’t worked until the last game,” Finidi said after the match.
“We are quite happy that we are creating chances and scoring. Nothing has changed; the work ethic is the same. We are just luckier now that the chances are going in, and that makes the difference.”
At 2–0, the Pride of Rivers almost let the game slip against their visitors, but Finidi’s side regained their two-goal advantage.
“I felt at a point we were a little bit sloppy, and the pressure was coming. I was angry, and that led to the buildup for their goal. It was like inviting them to pile pressure on us, and I didn’t like it. But we have to move on. We talked about that, and everything is settled,” he added.
With two games in hand, Rivers United, on 52 points, hold a two-point lead over former champions Rangers International FC.
