Raptors win VGC Basketball Championship

VGC Raptors are the winners of the 2016 ‎VGC Basketball Championship after defeating Team Cavaliers in the finals by 65 to 59 points over the weekend.

The league which had six teams named after the NBA franchise started on July 2. After eight weeks of 30 regular season games, Raptors were crowned champions following their comeback victory on Sunday at the VCG sports complex.
The recreational league is put together by Siji Sanwola, the host and commissioner for the league, out his passion for the game. The championship, amongst other objectives, aims to promote the game and foster camaraderie among the residents.
Sowola commended all the players that participated in the championship for their selflessness and passion, adding that without their commitment the tournament would not be successful. He vowed that the championship will be bigger next year with the help of sponsor while corporate organisations to support the basketball tournament.
“We didn’t have any proper sponsor. I was just talking to people and one of supporter, SPAR gave us products. I think going forward, we need to get corporate sponsorship because this is a fantastic event. This is a basketball championship and we will continue to improve. We’ve learned a lot from this year’s tournament. We’ll review all that and come up better tournament next year,” Sowola said.
Special recognition was given to groups and individuals that contributed to the success of the tournament while individuals players were honoured with different set of awards during the gala night.
