SWAN wants Olympic Stadium, Sports Sector Rejig In Anambra

By Goodness Ndukuba, Awka on February 4, 2026

Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra state chapter, has reiterated its call on Gov. Chukwuma Soludo to strongly consider providing an Olympic stadium in Awka, Anambra state capital.

They made the call in a communique issued at the end of its Congress signed by Chimezie Anaso and Uche Ndeke, Chairman and Secretary respectively.

They emphasised that the currently Awka Township stadium has been reduced to a football pitch due to the ‘Fun City’ project, another laudable public interest facility.

While commending Soludo for his investment in sports as well as for establishing Solution FC, they called on him to position the club for enhanced visibility, wider acceptability and viable marketability.

The body also urged the governor to rejig the sports sector and review the reward system for sportsmen and sportswomen to encourage more youths to engage in sports as a life changing endeavour.

SWAN once again, congratulated Gov. Chukwuma Soludo on his victory in the Nov. 8, 2025 election and called on him to surpass the records that earned him the re-election by continuing to deliver people oriented dividends of democracy especially in the area of youth development through sports.

It appealed to the governor to consider holding a reception for these and other sports ICONs as worthy ambassadors of the state, while restating its commitment to neutrality, objectivity and protection minority voices for sustainability development of sports in Anambra.

They commended the national leadership under Isaiah Benjamin for its purposeful and result oriented leadership that has earned SWAN a deserved place in Nigeria sports map.

They also commended Ozomma Tony Nezianya, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and other sports icons from Anambra state on their deserved recognition for outstanding contributions to sports journalism during the 60th anniversary of SWAN in Abuja, October 2025.

They also observed a one-minute silence in honour of late Nobert Okolie, former Chairman of Enugu Chapter of SWAN and Media Officer of Rangers Int’l FC of Enugu who was buried on Friday Jan. 30, 2026.
