Ademola Lookman Becomes Nigeria’s Second-Most Expensive Player After Move to Atletico Madrid

By Daily Sports Nigeria on February 3, 2026

Ademola Lookman has completed his move to Atletico Madrid from Atalanta.

The Spanish club announced the official signing on Monday — a few hours before the close of the 2026 winter transfer window in Europe.

According Fabrizio Romano, the Italian journalist, Atletico paid a €35 million fixed fee and €5 million add-ons for the 28-year-old winger. The deal makes Lookman the second-most expensive Nigerian player, behind only Victor Osimhen, who saw both Napoli and Galatasaray pay over €70 million for him.

Lookman penned a four-a-half-year deal with the Rojiblancos which and will play at the Wanda Metropolitano until June 2030

Lookman had arrived in Madrid for medicals on Sunday, after he had earlier been linked with a transfer to Fenerbahce in Turkey.

In recent months, the Super Eagles forward had endured a stormy relationship with Atalanta, the Bergamo club he led to the Europa League title with a hat-trick in the final.

In August 2025, Lookman deleted all Atalanta related post on his Instagram page in a bid to force a move away from the club.

Atalanta had rejected €42 million plus €3 million add-ons from Inter Milan for Lookman.

The Bergamo club claimed that its asking price for the player was €60 million despite the player and Nerrazuri reportedly agreeing on personal terms.

Lookman would refuse to resume pre-season with the squad or train with the team until mid-September over the transfer saga.
