Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has described Nigeria’s current national team as one of the greatest assemblies the country has ever had after their bronze medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Nigeria secured third place with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory over Egypt following a goalless draw at the end of regulation time, ending the tournament unbeaten.
Ogbu, who plays his club football with Slavia Prague, featured during the latter stages of the competition as Nigeria closed out the tournament on the podium.
Speaking to Ademola Victor TV in the mixed zone after the play-off match, the defender reflected on both the team’s achievement and the unity within the squad.
“I think the team is amazing. I love this team. I think this is one of the best gatherings we’ve ever had in the national team,” Ogbu said.
Despite being a newcomer to the Super Eagles setup, the defender said the sense of togetherness within the camp left a lasting impression on him throughout the tournament.
“I know I’m new here but for me, I’m really proud of this team,” he added.
The bronze medal is also a significant personal milestone for Ogbu, coming in his debut Africa Cup of Nations appearance for Nigeria. He featured in three matches during the tournament, starting twice and averaging 60 minutes per game, while contributing to one clean sheet and maintaining a passing accuracy of over 90 per cent.
Reflecting on winning a medal at his first major international competition, the centre-back credited family support for helping him reach that stage of his career.
“Yes. I’ve seen it. And family has always supported me to be in this position. So, I’m really happy and proud,” he said.
Ogbu made his Africa Cup of Nations debut earlier in the tournament during Nigeria’s group stage encounter against Uganda and went on to play a steady role as the Super Eagles progressed deep into the competition.
Asked how he intended to celebrate Nigeria’s podium finish, the defender offered a simple response.
“I just go relax happy and just eat and be happy,” he said.
