Nigeria have been handed a huge boost ahead of their AFCON 2025 quarterfinal clash with Algeria
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set for a mouth-watering AFCON 2025 quarter-final clash against Algeria , a fixture loaded with history and unfinished business.
As both sides prepare to lock horns in Marrakech, Nigeria have already been handed a significant edge that could prove decisive.
Nigeria will face Algeria in the quarter-finals after the Foxes edged DR Congo 1–0 in extra time, thanks to Adil Boulbina’s dramatic 119th-minute winner.
The result reopened old wounds for Nigerian fans, who still remember Riyad Mahrez’s late free kick that ended the Super Eagles’ AFCON 2019 campaign. While Nigeria have enjoyed deep runs since then, the pain of that defeat has lingered, making this encounter a chance for long-awaited revenge.
When the knockout draw was made, victory over Mozambique guaranteed Nigeria a rematch with either Algeria or DR Congo. With Algeria emerging once again, the stage is set for another high-stakes showdown.
The quarter-final will be played on Saturday, January 10, at the Grande Stade de Marrakech, with kick-off scheduled for 5:00 p.m. WAT.
Beyond motivation, Nigeria already hold a clear physical advantage heading into the last-eight tie. The Super Eagles played a day earlier than Algeria in the Round of 16, meaning they will be fresher going into the quarter-final.
While Nigeria dispatched Mozambique early enough to rotate and rest key players, Algeria were dragged through a gruelling 120-minute battle against DR Congo.
That extra-time exertion could take a toll on the Foxes, especially against a Nigerian side known for its intensity, athleticism, and depth. With more starters fully rested and raring to go, the Super Eagles enter the clash in better physical condition.
As Nigeria chase a fourth AFCON title, this combination of freshness and revenge motivation could be the decisive factor when they face Algeria in what promises to be one of the tournament’s defining matches.
