Enyimba will go for a win in Tuesday’s CAF Champions League contest against Mamelodi Sundowns in Port Harcourt.
The seven-time Nigerian champions cannot progress to the semi-finals even if they beat the South Africans by a lop-sided margin at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, having lost their opening three fixtures in the competition.
However, Enyimba head coach, Paul Aigbogun says it is important for ‘The Peoples’ Elephant’ to ‘play a great match and win for the fans’ on Tuesday.
“We are terribly hurt that we cannot go any further in the competition even if we beat Sundowns but that will not change the way we will approach the game.
“It is important that we play a great match and win for the fans because they have stood by us all through the season.
“Sundowns is a very good team but we must try to win the game because that is the least we owe our numerous supporters,” Aigbogun said.
Enyimba is still in the running for two titles domestically this term-the Federation Cup and the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Enyimba have virtually assured themselves of a place in the last four of the Federation Cup while they currently eight points adrift of the leaders, Wikki Tourists on the NPFL log, but have played two games less than the Bauchi club.
Aigbogun however refused to confirm if he will rest players on Tuesday in the dead rubber against the South Africans with sterner tests lying ahead on the horizon.
“Will I rest players against Sundowns? Well, you will have to wait until Tuesday to find out.
“What I can tell you however is that those who will be selected to play are important players who understand that they are not just flying the flag of Enyimba but also that of Nigeria.
“We want to win on Tuesday and I am very sure we will win,” he said.
Enyimba is the only Nigerian club that have won the CAF Champions League title, a feat achieved in successive years in 2003 and 2004.
