Chairman of two time African Champions, Enyimba International Football Club of Aba, Chief Felix Anyansi Agwu, has blamed Enyimba’s absence at their home ground, Enyimba International Stadium on their predicament this season both in the League and on the continent.
He said the club’s state of affairs in respect of their efforts in this season’s competitions would have been different had it been that they played their home matches at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba, but unfortunately due to the rehabilitation work at their home ground all their matches are played away from home.
He explained that he is very much aware that home ground does not play the game but then it helps home side because the team does not only know the ground very well but they get maximum support from their fans and supporters which is a big motivation for the team.
Anyansi stated this in a telephone chat with dailysportsng.com on Thursday even as he revealed that the People’s Elephant as the Abia State financed side are called are preparing for their continental engagement on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
“We have been busy running around to ensure that things are put in place for our continental game against the Sounders of South Africa on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State,” Anyansi began.
“Our absence from our home ground in Aba has not helped matters for us as all our games this year have been played away. It is true that home ground does not play the game but then there is a great difference when you are playing away and when you are at home.
“If you play at home you have added advantage as the players get maximum support from fans and supporters who troop out in their numbers to give their support which is a big motivation for the team. Apart from that when you play at home, the players have the advantage of knowing their ground more than their opponents which is also a plus. The home support acts like the 12th player on the pitch which is very vital.
“As a matter of fact, our position on the league is an eloquent testimony of how good Enyimba are. Assuming we have the privilege of playing our home games at home, probably our position on the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table would have been better,” Anyansi enthused.
Enyimba will be playing their continental game on Tuesday for honour as the Aba based club are no more in contention for the semi finals of this year’s continental premier club competition having lost all their matches before now. Only two teams from the two groups would make it to the semi finals of the money spinning continental club competition and in this respect, Zamalek of Egypt and Sounders of South Africa are qualifiers for the semi finals. Tunisian Club Eto’l du Sahel have been axed by CAF for the unruly behavior of their fans.
Enyimba is the only Nigerian club that made it to the group stage of this year continental competitions, both Orange CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions.
