Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, has revealed how she was inspired as an up-and-coming player by former Nigeria striker, Perpetua Nkwocha, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Brighton goalkeeper made the surprise revelation during a chat with Sky Sports Football.

In the short interview that was released on Sunday, Nnadozie also said that, although she played football while growing up, she wasn’t really a fan and her favourite player was the Super Falcons legend.

“It was Perpetua Nkwocha, the former Nigerian striker,” Nnadozie said.

“To be honest, when I was growing up, I wasn’t really a football fan. I was playing football, but I didn’t even watch matches. I was just playing for the love, and I never knew I was going to be here.”

The 24-year-old also spoke about her pre-match activities.

“I don’t really have a serious pre-match ritual. I just try to stay happy. Talk to some important people in my life. I just play my music; I love Afrobeats. I listen to Burna Boy, Tems, and Wizkid. I listen to their songs a lot. A lot of girls in the team also listen to Tems, especially.”

Nwokcha, 49, was a lethal figure in the Falcons’ attack, representing Nigeria from 1999 to 2015. She scored 80 goals for the country and won five WAFCON titles in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2014.

She was also named African Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2004, 2005, 2010 and 2011. The striker had retired by the time Nnadozie came into the Super Falcons in 2018.

Just like Nkwocha raised the bar for women strikers in Africa, Nnadozie is doing the same between the sticks with her exploits at the Super Falcons and club level.

The goalkeeper recently moved to Brighton after a successful five-year spell with Paris FC, where she inspired them to their first title in about 20 years.

She also conceded just twice from open play during the Super Falcons’ 10th WAFCON triumph in Morocco earlier this year.

Nnadozie has won the CAF Women’s goalkeeper award twice, and it could become three successive honours when the 2025 CAF Awards are held in Morocco by December.
