Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will be desperate to reignite their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign when they take on Saudi Arabia in their second Group F clash in Chile on Thursday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The seven-time African champions slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Norway in their opening fixture on Monday, despite enjoying long spells of dominance and creating a number of clear opportunities.

On two occasions, their strong appeals for penalties were dismissed by the referee, leaving the players and technical crew frustrated at what might have been.

The result was a bitter pill for Coach Aliyu Zubair’s side, who had entered the tournament with high expectations.

Nigeria, a two-time finalist at this level, most recently in 2005, had targeted a winning start to ease their path into the knockout rounds. Instead, they now find themselves in a must-win situation against the Saudis, knowing that defeat would leave their qualification hopes hanging by a thread ahead of Sunday’s decisive encounter with Colombia.

Victory, however, would change the complexion of the group entirely, placing the Flying Eagles in a favourable position to advance to the Round of 16, a stage they have reached in their last three appearances at the competition.

Zubair, who guided the team to a third-place finish at the recent U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, remains optimistic that his young squad will rise to the challenge.

With all key players available, Zubair is expected to stick with his preferred 4-3-3 formation, which allows the team to maintain balance between attack and midfield stability.

There may, however, be minor adjustments in the forward line, where the Eagles struggled with composure in front of goal against the Norwegians. Much will depend on the creativity of midfield dynamo Daniel Daga and the sharpness of forwards Kparobo Arierhi, Charles Agada, and Samson Lawal, who are expected to shoulder the goalscoring responsibility.

Defensively, the Flying Eagles will have to be cautious, especially as Israel Ayuma, Daga, and Agada are already walking a disciplinary tightrope after picking up bookings in the opening game. Another yellow card would rule them out of the final group match against Colombia, a scenario Zubair will be keen to avoid.

Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, come into the fixture with confidence, having held Colombia to a hard-fought draw in their opening game.

Known for their physical style and compact defending, the Saudis are expected to pose a stern test for Nigeria’s attack. Their defensive discipline, combined with a counter-attacking approach, could frustrate the Flying Eagles if patience and precision are not applied in the final third.

Following the U-17 team’s elimination from the WAFU B tournament, which ruled them out of the next AFCON and World Cup, Thursday’s clash (Friday midnight in Nigeria) carries added weight. It is not only pivotal to the Flying Eagles’ immediate fate in Chile, but also symbolic of how far this new generation of Nigeria’s age-grade sides can soar.
