Hosts Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) Football Club of Lagos on Wednesday evening had to battle hard to escape defeat to Warri Wolves at their Agege Stadium fortress in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL). The game eventually ended 1-1.
Obinna Eleje scored the opener of the game for the visitors at the 54th minute before Isah Akor headed the equaliser for the hosts at the 80th minute.
In a very uninspiring first half, Chijioke Akuneto, Sikiru Olatunbosun and Isah Akor were the guilty party for MFM FC as they wasted various chances that would have given MFM FC victory. Warri Wolves did not really threaten MFM goalie Folarin, Ajiboye, but it was the former Nigeria U-17 World Cup winner, Dele Ajiboye that was on the busy side. `
The second half also took the same form till the 54th minute, when Obinna Eleje took a long range shot to score for Warri Wolves, stunning the hosts. MFM FC immediately, frantically searching for the equaliser, with Sikiru Olatunbosun shooting wide on the 63rd minute. This forced Warri Wolves into defensive tactics.
Daily Sports spoke with the coach of Warri Wolves, Mansur Abdullahi, and he praised his team saying: “We came with tactics; if we cannot win we should play a draw which we did.”
Speaking on his style of play, Abdullahi said: “I came with a lot of defenders, since they did not train for five days and they were able to do damage to Chukwuka Onuwa.”
The coach is confident of escaping relegation, saying: “I am not under pressure.”
Speaking on the recent dismal performance of MFM, the club Chairman, Godwin Enakhena, blamed it on their lack of experience in the league. “You cannot do without experience, it is key. Wikki Tourist and Enugu Rangers have been together for a long time, and you cannot experience a baby-side like MFM FC to just excel at once in a league of this nature,” Enakhena said.
Coach of MFM FC, Fidelis Ilechukwu, expressed disappointment at the end of the match. “We need to go back to the drawing board. We have been training on how to score, but today there was no result for it. However, I will blame the strikers for the goals we lost. I still believe in them though,” he said.
