It was football at its finest as the Cathedral Archdeaconry, Diocese on the Niger, Anambra State, etched their name in golden letters, emerging undisputed champions of the maiden Bishop Owen Nwokolo U-21 Football Tournament.
Under the floodlights of the buzzing Cathedral Sports Complex, the Cathedral lads dug deep to edge past a spirited Omagba Archdeaconry side, 2-1, in a pulsating final that had fans on the edge of their seats.
The contest lived up to its billing – a showcase of raw energy, deft footwork, and future stars in the making.
Cathedral drew first blood midway through the first half with a thunderous strike that had the Omagba keeper rooted to the spot.
Omagba, unwilling to roll over, clawed their way back with a scrappy equalizer after the break, sparking wild celebrations. But the Cathedral boys, with nerves of steel, sealed the crown later on, courtesy of a clinical finish that sent their supporters into raptures.
Earlier in the day, the Nkpor Archdeaconry had grabbed third place in dramatic fashion, edging Onitsha South Archdeaconry 6-5 on penalties after a nail-biting 1-1 draw.
The shootout, dripping with tension, had fans holding their breath as Nkpor’s final spot-kick nestled calmly into the net.
The tournament, beyond the silverware, has unearthed a mine of young footballing gems, and the excitement is not over yet.
On Saturday, July 26, the spotlight swings back to the Cathedral Sports Complex, where the best talents scouted from the tournament are expected to face off against BONFA FC in a high-profile exhibition clash.
The Team Manager, Ven Francis Orah, says the Bishop on the Niger, the Rt Rev Dr Owen Nwokolo, will grace the occasion as Guest of Honour, alongside the tournament sponsor, Barrister Rob Izuchukwu and several dignitaries.
Fans are therefore urged to mark their calendars; Saturday promises real fireworks, flair, and a feast of modern and entertaining football.
One thing is apparently certain: if Monday’s grand finale was any indication, the Cathedral pitch will once again rumble with cheers, chants, and the beautiful game in all its glory.
