Rivers United head coach Edwin Okon doesn't believe that the top-flight loss at Sunshine Queens will damage his side's title hopes.
The Nigerian champions suffered a 0-2 defeat at the Akure outfit in Saturday’s Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) matchday 12 clash at the Akure Township Stadium.
Okon said the Port Harcourt side lost the top-flight encounter to referees and not to the hosts.
“I do not count the loss to Sunshine Queens as anything as I’m certain it will have no effect on our title ambition.
“The referees played and decided the game, not Sunshine Queens or Rivers Angels.
“The encounter as well as the outcome was clearly predetermined by the referees so that is not the type of match one will waste his energy to worry about.
“We were told openly that there is nothing that will make us win the match and that was proven by the disagreement among the referees over our clean goal that was later disallowed.
“As far as we are concerned the loss at Sunshine Stars will not affect our title hopes once teams honour matches and referees improve on their performances.
“The biggest challenge facing the women’s league is poor officiating and the time has come for those in charge of football in the land to look pensively in that direction with the aim of weeding out the bad eggs among the referees,” said the former Super Falcons head coach to supersport.com.
The perennial Nigerian champions will be at home at the weekend against visiting Adamawa Queens.
Rivers Angels are atop of the log on 12 points after deduction of points from the expelled sides.
