By Goodness Ndukuba, Awka on May 30, 2025

Anambra state was completely shutdown in obedience to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) commemoration and honouring Biafran heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Nigerian Civil War.

Recalls that Emma Powerful, IPOB's Media and Publicity Secretary in a statement, said that the date would be an annual “Memorial and Remembrance Day for Biafra Heroes and Heroines.”

Powerful called for a strict lockdown from 6 AM to 6 PM on May 30th. This includes a ban on all forms of transportation by road, air, and sea, as well as the closure of schools, community meetings, religious services, markets, and stores. Public assemblies of any kind are also prohibited.

Commercial activities did not function in Anambra state including banks, markets, particularly in Onitsha, the commercial hub of the state, filling stations, vehicular movements, and also pupils and students of private and public schools stayed away from schools.

There were palpable fears that the members of IPOB who called for the lockdown may unleash mayhem on the populace, hence people stayed back in there homes.

Most people, particularly traders, commercial drivers and filling stations attendants did not move out of their houses for fears of molestation.

Madam Theresa Okoli, a trader told our Correspondent that it was better indoor instead of going out of the house and got killed unnecessarily.

"I had planned for sit at home yesterday buying all I needed for the event, and I expected everyone to have done so," she said.

Meanwhile, the Anambra state police command ahead of the sit-at-home, has set up a Joint Security Forces to intensified patrols across strategic locations to forestall any possible breakdown of law and order.

The command said that the patrols was aimed to prevent any molestation, harassment, or intimidation of innocent citizens engaged in lawful activities on Friday by any group or individuals.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer of the command, said that the decision followed the outcome of a closed-door meeting held by the Anambra Security Service Commanders in anticipation of the illegal sit-at-home orchestrated by criminal elements.

He further explained that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has acknowledged the heightened motivation of the Police and other security agencies, which stems from the cooperation and support received from Ndi Anambra, who have united to condemn any acts threatening national peace.
