Hundreds of young footballers gathered at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium in Lagos to take part in the second season of the Ignite Megastars football trials.
The players competed in front of former international stars and many spectators.
They went head-to-head at the first stage of the trials, which is known for its special selection process.
Organisers said the programme aims to put grassroots talent in the spotlight, hoping that European football clubs will take an interest in the standout players.
Speaking on how the programme can help young footballers grow and get noticed by international clubs, the founder of Ignite Megastar, Ozavize Daniyan, said, “The Ignite vision is to change lives by discovering and promoting sports talent.
“We are also creating a platform for recognising and developing grassroots sports, with the goal of cultivating a vast pool of world-class athletes in the country, while maintaining integrity and transparency in sports talent identification and selection process for youths between the ages of 16 to 19.”
She added that the project starts with football and gives both male and female athletes a chance to showcase their skills, noting that they will take part in the Ignite competitions and be assessed through a clear voting process.
A co-promoter of the programme, Robert Oloyede, also praised the success of the first season, saying that some of the top players were awarded scholarships by Juventus Academy Nigeria.
“Our first edition was good as Juventus Nigeria gave scholarships to our top talents. We hope to forge even more partnerships with different organisations capable of bringing the best out of the boys. These players are the future, and if we want our football to grow, I believe we need to start at the grassroots level,” he said.
