Nigeria to host 13th ECOWAS African Wrestling tournament

Nigeria is set to host the 13th ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament in Abuja from March 6-8, 2025, as part of celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the West African regional body, The PUNCH reports.

The championship, to be held at the Velodrome, Package A of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, will bring together top wrestling talents from across the West African subregion in a collaborative effort between the Economic Community of West African States and the National Sports Commission.

NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko expressed delight at the opportunity for Nigeria to host the prestigious tournament, assuring that the country would deliver a hospitable and world-class event that meets international standards.

Similarly, NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade welcomed the selection of Nigeria as the host nation, highlighting the country’s readiness to showcase its organizational capabilities on the regional stage.

The three-day wrestling extravaganza is expected to strengthen regional sports ties while showcasing Nigeria’s growing stature as a hub for international sporting events.

It will feature competitions across various weight categories for both male and female wrestlers, with participating countries expected to field their strongest teams.

This will be the second major regional wrestling tournament hosted by Nigeria in recent years, further cementing the country’s reputation as a leading promoter of the sport in West Africa.
