Remo Stars are now 10 points clear at the top of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League table thanks to a nervy 2-0 win over Kwara United in a match-day 25 game in Ikenne on Thursday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Sky Blue Stars left it late against the hard-fighting Harmony Boys with goals from Samuel Anaekwe and Haruna Hadi getting the job done in the closing stages of the game.
Thanks to 3SC’s slip against Lobi Stars on Wednesday, Remo had the chance to widen the gap between them and their rivals to 10 points, but achieving that proved difficult, even while it seemed possible.
Daniel Ogunmodede’s team got off the blocks as quickly as possible but their first real threat from Tochukwu Michael hit the woodwork in the 12th minute just as Sikiru Alimi’s 22nd-minute strike was also kept out by the post.
Togolese striker Franck Mawuena thought he had opened the scoring with a header off a corner kick in the 25th minute but it was chalked off for a foul on the goalkeeper.
Despite creating enough, Remo endured a goalless first half but kept digging deep in the second 45 minutes.
Captain Junior Nduka tried his luck from a free kick 10 minutes into the second half before he was also denied by the post some minutes later.
Ogunmodede’s substitutions proved to be the masterstroke for Remo again with Anaekwe coming off the bench to break the deadlock with a header – turning home a spilled ball by the goalkeeper from Nduka’s free kick in the 79th minute.
Another substitute, Hadi, poked home the ball off the goalkeeper on Ibrahim Shuaib’s low shot to double Remo’s advantage in stoppage time.
The win takes Remo Stars to 51 points in the table after 25 matches, 10 points more than second-placed 3SC who were held to a 2-2 draw by Lobi Stars on Wednesday.
Their next game is a trip to Nasarawa United next Wednesday.
