‘Abeg he dey score goals oo’, Leverkusen react to Boniface winner in DFB-Pokal

By Daily Sports Nigeria on February 6, 2025

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have hailed Victor Boniface following his heroic display in Bayer Leverkusen’s dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over 1. FC Köln in the DFB-Pokal quarter-final.

The official Super Eagles account celebrated Boniface’s impact on Thursday, tweeting:

“Super Sub  Victor Boniface came off the bench to grab the winner for Leverkusen against Köln in the DFB-Pokal last night.”

PUNCH Online reports that Leverkusen found themselves trailing 2-0 after goals from Damion Downs (45+1′) and Linton Maina (54′) put Köln in control.

However, Patrik Schick sparked the comeback, reducing the deficit in the 61st minute before equalising in stoppage time (90+7′) to send the match into extra time.

The Nigerian striker, who came off the bench, delivered the decisive blow in the 98th minute, volleying home a cross from Alejandro Grimaldo to complete the turnaround.

Köln thought they had leveled the match in the 112th minute, but Imad Rondic’s goal was ruled offside, securing Leverkusen’s place in the semi-finals.

Boniface’s match-winning display drew widespread praise from fans and pundits, particularly from Nigerian football supporters.

Coach Xabi Alonso commended the team’s resilience, stating: “It was a very tough game against a very good opponent. But we showed a good reaction. It was maybe not our best game, but we played with a big heart and fought until the last minute.”

The Nigerian forward has been in the spotlight recently, responding to critics from a podcast who questioned his ability.

His goal against Köln was a perfect reply, proving his worth as a clutch player for both club and country.

Boniface vs critic

Meanwhile, Boniface Jr. on Wednesday clapped back at a Nigerian lady who dismissed his talent during a recent episode of The Heat podcast.

The lady, identified as @getacupoftea, criticised Boniface, claiming he spends too much time posting unfunny memes and hosting giveaways instead of focusing on his football career.

She argued that the striker has not achieved anything remarkable, particularly at the international level, and lacks real talent.

The podcast quickly gained traction online, drawing mixed reactions.

However, Boniface didn’t let the comments slide.

He responded by revealing a private chat in which @getacupoftea had previously messaged him, expressing admiration and even requesting one of his jerseys.

The leaked chat, shared by @Thetifefab, went viral, exposing the critic’s apparent double standards and sparking a backlash against her.

Despite the criticism, @getacupoftea remained unfazed, doubling down on her stance via her Instagram story, where she continued to ridicule Boniface’s humour and football skills.

Meanwhile, the duo shared troll videos and memes on their Instagram story about 10 hours ago, PUNCH Online reports.
