Anambra SWAN, Sports Stakeholders Frown On Police Delay In Investigation Of Brutality Against Maureen Madu

Sports stakeholders in Anambra State, including the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), have expressed dissatisfaction with the delay by the Anambra State Police Command in concluding investigations into the alleged brutality against Maureen Madu, a former Super Falcons star, and her academy members.

The incident, which occurred on Oct. 9 at Maureen Madu Kiddies Football Academy in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, involved operatives suspected to be from the Anti-Cult Unit, Ukpo, who allegedly invaded the academy, assaulted young players, and arrested Madu in handcuffs following accusations from a parent.

In a statement signed by SWAN Chairman Chimezie Anaso and Secretary Uche Ndeke, the association condemned the alleged actions of the officers and called for swift justice.

They noted that Madu, one of Nigeria’s most decorated female footballers with five Nations Cup titles, four World Cup appearances, and two Olympic outings, deserved respect and not public humiliation.

“The report that she was taken away in handcuffs with two hands behind her back like a common criminal, while the children in camp were beaten and left with varying degrees of injuries, is most unfortunate and calls for condemnation by all,” the statement read.

The association lamented that Madu’s efforts to give back to the community through her football academy should be supported and not met with such treatment.

They urged the police to expedite investigation and ensure justice is served without bias.

“We call on the Police authority in Anambra State to take special interest in the matter, investigate it thoroughly, and ensure justice is done,” it said.

The association also urged the Anambra State Government and sports stakeholders to intervene in the matter to protect sports administrators, athletes, and budding talents in the state.

While the police had earlier assured the public of an investigation, the delay in concluding the process has raised concerns among sports enthusiasts and the general public, who are demanding transparency and accountability.

Stakeholders insist that a prompt resolution is essential to restore confidence in the justice system and safeguard the contributions of individuals like Madu, who are working to develop sports and empower youth in Anambra State.
