Abia Warriors and visiting Akwa United played out a 0-0 draw at the Umuahia Township Stadium in a match day 30 fixture in the Nigeria Professional Football League fixture on Saturday.
Still savouring their imperious performance over title contenders Wikki Tourists in a 3-0 win last weekend, Akwa United were motivated going into this contest at Abia Warriors.
With only one win in their last five games and their unbelievable fall from top-half of the league table, Abia warriors knew any further points dropped at home will drag them further into the relegation zone so they came out fighting from the blast of the whistle but lacked the killer instinct to finish their opponents.
With all their dominance in this game, Abia Warriors could only hit target four times and all four were very weak. Several crosses were sent into the box but none to connect well as Akwa United goalkeeper, Bassey Akpan was always swift in cutting out most of the crosses that came within his reach.
The Promise Keepers also had a very resolute defensive backline as skipper of the side, Godspower Igudia in company of Alhassan Dosso put up solid performance blocking everything that came their way. Their midfielders were calm and a battling Fortune Omoniwari upfront linked up play well help Akwa United grind out such result.
Lacking spark, the game failed to produced clear cut opportunities and the closer was an Anthony Okemmiri cross which almost dropped in the far post. Despite the numerical disadvantage by the visitors after Emmanuel Chigozie was sent for an off-the-ball incident, Abia Warriors could still not fashion a way to get a goal.
The hosts cannot complain much as a soggy pitch hindered free-flowing football owing to a heavy downpour three minutes into the game. (npfl.ng)
