Lagos approves monopoly as a championship sport

By Daily Sports on August 6, 2016

The Chairman Lagos State Sports Commission and Special Adviser to the Executive Governor, Mr. Deji Tinubu, has disclosed that the State Government has approved Monopoly as a Championship sport in the State at an event organised by the Commission to officially announce Monopoly as a recognised sport in the State.

He explained that the milestone achievement was borne out of the collaboration between the Commission and Bestman Games, adding that the partnership would ensure that the true essence of Monopoly as an entertainment sport is captured and promoted among sport enthusiasts in the State.

Mr. Tinubu said the partnership is also in line with the philosophy and vision of the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode led administration on sports with a view to creating opportunities for everyone to engage and participate in different sporting activities in an enabling environment and in collaboration with the private sector.

In his remarks, the CEO of Bestman Games, Mrs. Nimi Akinkugbe, said the quest for Monopoly to be approved as a championship began in December 2012, with the launch of the maiden City of Lagos Edition of Monopoly at the Lagos City Hall and also the first African City Edition of Hasbro’s World Famous board game.

She revealed that a Tournament tagged City of Lagos U-17 Monopoly Championship will hold on 17th September, 2016 where no fewer than 2,000 students from 100 from both private and public schools will vie for the Lagos State championship with the overall winner expected to go home with N1 million dedicated as Educational Fund.

“A month ago, we had the pleasure of training 100 teachers from 100 Lagos schools for the championship. It is appropriate that this historic Tournament in which we expect to beat a world record should take place on the grounds of Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere which is the landmark of Monopoly Board,” Akinkugbe said.
