Sneers, jeers as fans lament Eagles’ defeat in Abidjan

By Daily Sports Nigeria on June 11, 2024

Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, his players, as well as his employers, the Nigeria Football Federation, have come under scathing criticisms on social media, after the Eagles suffered a shock 2-1 loss to Benin Republic on match-day 4 of the CAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Finidi’s men put up an underwhelming performance as they lost their 1-0 lead to a 2-1 defeat against the Cheetahs at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Ivory Coast.

The loss means the Eagles have just three points from a possible 12 points having drawn their first three games as well.

In the 29th minute, Raphael Onyedika opened the score for Nigeria but Jodel Dossou equalised for Benin after a defensive blunder by the Eagles.

The Beninoise then took the lead shortly before halftime, thanks to a right-footed effort by Steve Mounie from a corner kick.

Reacting to the poor performance, fans took to social media to slam the Eagles’ poor display on Sunday.

Collins Chikelu lamented, “Super Eagles under Finidi George is a complete mess. As usual, no pattern of play, no strategy, no hunger, drive, or desire to win, just stupid pride and self-aggrandizement from the overrated players.”

Ademola James wrote, “It’s shameful watching this team. How can they play like this and expect to win? Fu*king Super Eagles.”

Abiodun Ibrahim warned there would be worse to come, “If NFF does not invest in a top-quality coach, the Super Eagles will continue to suffer.”

A fan with the username, John Doe, @Ndfrek wrote, “We are going to miss another World Cup. Finidi George deserves to be sacked for benching Boniface again today. What will it cost the FG/NFF to hire a decent coach for the Super Eagles? We have top players. We need a quality coach to manage them.”

Content creator, Sunday Mbah, noted that Nigerians should now see how important African Player of The Year Victor Osimhen was to the Eagles.

“I hope we can all see how important Victor Osimhen is to this super eagles team,” he wrote.

Esther Chidi despaired saying that the state of things in Nigeria is affecting Eagles as well, “Nothing is working in Nigeria. Even the Super Eagles can’t win against Benin Republic.”

Nurudeen Obalola jokingly compared the team to Premier League giants Man United, “This Super Eagles side reminds me of Ten Hag’s Manchester United last season. No matter the opposition, they struggle. Terrible performances followed by disastrous results.”
