Joshua backed to beat Dubois

Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois could be facing off at Wembley Stadium this September – will the old guard get the victory or can young Dubois snatch the top spot?

The 26-year-old scored a career-best win over Filip Hrgovic this month and with that came the IBF Interim title. It puts him in prime position to challenge for the full world belt should Oleksandr Usyk be forced to vacate it.

Hot on his heels is ‘AJ’, who wants nothing more than a third stint as champion. His team are in discussions with Dubois’ for the already-booked September fight.

In an interview with Boxing King Media, Johnny Nelson backed the two-time heavyweight champion to show the young gun how it’s done.

“I think AJ will have too much for Daniel. He’s too correct in his punch power. Daniel gets hit, and AJ can hit. If AJ underestimates Daniel then he makes a mistake he’s made twice before in his career. I don’t think he will, because Daniel hits too hard to take lightly. It’s a good fight.”

The former cruiserweight world champion was adamant that he wasn’t overlooking the resurgent Dubois, but was confident that Joshua wouldn’t either.

“I’m not (underestimating Dubois’ power) but I’m understanding the danger of an on-form Anthony Joshua. An on-form Anthony Joshua is a world beater. Dubois is flying up there, saying ‘right I’m starting to believe myself.’ Saturday I’d say was the best performance I’ve seen from Daniel Dubois.”

We’ve seen excellent performances from AJ. If these two guys turn up respecting each other and bring their best, I say AJ has too much in the locker for Daniel. Pressure, cunningness, gameplan, concentration when it’s on form. So I’d expect AJ to get the job done.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn tells Seconds Out that the Dubois fight will be the target if the IBF World Title is on the line. The sanctioning body has not made a decision on whether or not Usyk can keep hold of it for his Tyson Fury rematch.
