Osimhen named in Serie A Team of The Season

By Daily Sports Nigeria on May 27, 2024

Following another impressive season with Napoli, Nigeria international, Victor Osimhen, has been included in the 2023/24 Serie A Team of The Season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Osimhen made the 23-man list unveiled on the official social media channels of the Italian Serie A.

While he was not as prolific as he was during the 2022/23 season when he finished as the Serie A top scorer with 26 goals, guiding Napoli to their first Scudetto title in over three decades, Osimhen still boasts of decent numbers considering how much Napoli have struggled.

In a season where the former champions lost 11 games and only managed 13 wins, the striker, who missed a month of action during his involvement with the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast early this year, still managed to score 15 goals and had three assists in 24 league games.

Despite his below-standard performance, Osimhen remains Napoli’s top scorer and third-highest scorer in the topflight league.

Interestingly, only Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martínez (24 goals) and Juventus’s Dušan Vlahović (16) scored more goals than Osimhen in the Italian topflight.

Both Martínez and Vlahović are named to the Serie Team of the Season alongside Osimhen for their contributions.

Osimhen’s Napoli teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also gets a look in.

Sunday’s game against Lecce could be Osimhen’s last appearance for Napoli as the Lagos-born striker has been linked with several top European clubs.

Meanwhile, there was no room for the man of the moment, Ademola Lookman, despite his stellar performance for Atalanta.

The 26-year-old had 15 goal contributions (nine goals and six assists) from 29 Serie A games.

Though, Samuel Chukwueze missed out his AC Milan teammates Christian Pulisic, Theo Hernandez, Olivier Giroud, and Rafael Leao joined Osimhen on the prestigious list.
