Leaders Enugu Rangers maintained their top spot in the Nigeria Premier Football League thanks to a commanding 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Bayelsa United at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday.
Godwin Obaje scored a brace, scoring the first in the 41st minute and added the second in the 66th while Chiedozie Okorie added the third two minutes later.
The win ensured the seven-time champions maintain their four-point lead ahead of reigning champions Enyimba and Remo Stars.
In Umuahia, Benard Ovoke scored a 72nd-minute winner for Enyimba as they beat local rivals Abia Warriors 1-0 to keep the pressure on Rangers.
Remo Stars however dropped from second to third in the table after suffering a 3-2 defeat against Kwara United in Ilorin. Franck Mawuena and Dayo Ojo scored two late goals for Daniel Ogunmodede’s side but they weren’t enough to outclass the efforts of Wasiu Alalade and Isaiah Ejeh for Kwara plus an own goal by Ahmed Akinyele.
3SC are also seven points adrift of leaders Rangers thanks to a thrilling 2-2 draw away from home against Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.
It’s also a fight to finish in the drop zone as Sunshine Stars moved out of the relegation zone despite being held to a goalless draw by Bendel Insurance in Akure just as Akwa United secured a priceless 2-1 win away at Lobi Stars to move to 15th, although both sides are just goal difference above the drop.
Doma United who were high-flyers in the first half of the campaign now find themselves in the relegation zone after a 2-1 loss against Kano Pillars.
Heartland also beat Gombe United 3-0 in Owerri, but both clubs are still rooted to 19th and 20th with 32 points and 25 points respectively.
