Victor Oismhen’s wonder goal against Monza on Sunday continues to attract comments from global football icons, with Chelsea and Ivory Coast Didier Drogba being the latest to sing the praise of the Nigeria striker, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
After a difficult period in March, when he failed to score in four matches for Napoli after he scored five goals in three games, including a hat-trick against Sassuolo in February, Osimhen resumed scoring last weekend with a towering header in Napoli 4-2 comeback win at Monza.
With 54 minutes on the clock, Cameroon’s André-Frank Zambo Anguissa sent in a delightful, looping right-footed cross, having spotted Osimhen primed 12 yards out after forging space between three defenders.
Osimhen leaped high to score the spectacular ‘Superman goal’ to help the champions stage a comeback.
The goal certainly left one of his potential predecessors at Stamford Bridge, Drogba in awe of his courage.
Speaking during an interview with FOX Sports, Drogba, whom the Nigeria striker idolizes, admitted he wouldn’t have attempted such a goal during his playing days.
“I saw Victor score that goal against Monza,” Drogba told FOX Sports.
“Oh God, he’s got hurt, I thought. I wouldn’t have gone for that ball, it was crazy, an absurd goal.”
Osimhen has a pedigree as far as astonishing leaps are concerned. In February 2023, the Nigerian jumped 2.58m in the air to score against Spezia, leap-frogging Cristiano Ronaldo to register the second-highest leap recorded in Serie A behind only Fikayo Tomori.
The 25-year-old continues to be linked with a move away from Napoli with Chelsea, Arsenal, Paris Saint Germain and Bayern Munich some of his suitors.
