Enyimba head coach George Finidi is optimistic that the nine-time Nigeria Premier Football League champions can defend their crown and make it 10 titles at the end of the current 2023/24 campaign, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
No thanks to the 1-0 defeat during a match-day 25 game against Remo Stars in Ikenne on Wednesday, the People’s Elephant are currently fifth in the table with 42 points and four points adrift leaders Lobi Stars.
After a slow start to the campaign, Enyimba recently joined the title race but their quest has been slowed down, having only won two out of their last five matches.
The defeat in Ikenne was their ninth of the season, with 13 games left to play but Finidi believes it won’t hamper their chances of winning a 10th title.
“I feel the game was 50/50 and either side could have won it. It was as a result of poor defending. Without a mistake they could not have scored and the same applies to us. I would have just loved my defender to be a little bit attentive and aggressive in that situation. It was a good game for fans to see, but I’m quite disappointed,” FInidi said after the game.
“Everything is still possible, we will not throw in the towel, and we will fight till the last day. We see our chances to defend the title and we will not relent in our efforts.”
Enyimba’s next game is at home against fellow giants Kano Pillars.
Meanwhile, Finidi who doubles as an assistant coach of the Super Eagles, has been confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation to lead the team against Ghana and Mali in friendlies set for March 22 and 26 in Morocco, following the exit of Portuguese Jose Peseiro.
He is also one of the prime candidates for the substantive Eagles head coach job.
