The 2016 Winners Golden Bet/Lagos Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Cup kicked off Tuesday at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Surulere Lagos. The competition saw a large turnout of fans supporting their media organisations.
At the end of Day One, Complete Sports won 2-1 against Inspiration FM, with UNILAG FM thrashing Galaxy TV 5-0.
In other results, Top Radio thrashed Goal.com 5-2, Nigeria Television Authoity (NTA) beat TV Continental 4-2 and Cool FM overcame Sun Newspapers 3-1.
Speaking with the Chairman, Organizing Committee of the Lagos SWAN Cup, Mr. Debo Oshundun, he expressed delight with the turnout for the competition. According to him, more teams registered for the competition and this brings joy to the organisers of the SWAN Week.
Oshundun also expressed happiness that so far “there have been no challenges and no protests,” adding: “We ensure that everyone playing are true members of media houses as they show their valid ID cards before participating in the games.”
The prize money remains as it was last year: 100,000 naira for the winners, 70,000 naira for the second position and 50,000 naira for the third best team.
When asked about other programmes lined up for the SWAN Week, Oshundun said: “We will start our medical checkup for our members and other members of the sports community tomorrow (today), as some members from an NGO in the United States will be coming to do the tests (blood pressure, sugar level, etc), which is for free. After the screenings drugs will be given out to those who need it (which will last them for two months). We are also going to be having a seminar for our members and we are expecting the President of the African Journalists Association, Mr. Mitchel Obi, to address the SWAN members.”
